Phosphorus Tide is a magazine with a commitment to publishing socially relevant stories. As artists, we should have a social conscience. I had hoped not to give prompts for stories that deal directly with political/social issues in some way but the abuses that have come out among many American prisons have sickened me to a degree that something has to be done. I hope that I never have to do this again. For this story, I want you to write about the systematic ways in which prisoners are abused by the prison administration and/or a larger uncaring society. Because this is an issue that desperately needs to be tackled. Some Resources: www.aclu.org/prison/conditions/26421prs20060810.html Abuse of prisoners in Louisiana Prisons during Katrina. While I am sure that things this bad happen about once a month somewhere in America, any human being with a conscience, whether on the left or the right should be sickened that things like this were allowed to happen. www.prisoners.com/Aimed primarily at the prison system in Pennsylvania but just about everything here could apply elsewhere.
